Trust corporate America to take something as simple as loading a text article into a digital “experience”. What the hell even is that? (Its marketing jargon for ads, I know). Talk about a circle jerk around the marketing table though.
Reader mode is a godsend for this crap.
Google’s AMP was supposed to stop this, but they never could get around the conflict of interest between “our search engine experience is improved by prioritizing fast loading results” and “our ad business needs websites to carry a ton of ads,” ended up carving in enough exceptions and an anti-AMP backlash that they pretty much walked away from the whole thing.
Google? Walking away from a project it starts? Who could have seen this.

AMP could have been that, but the greedy bastards at google had to make it about themselves and tried to forcibly host/steal the content from everyone else. Also it forcibly added a banner ad for google on every AMP page.

The world didn’t need as many programmers as we were led to believe. Showing text, images, and video is a solved problem. There doesn’t need to be a new framework every 6 months. They don’t need to throw out the last one to churn out a rehash of the same website so coders can justify their existence with some metrics of performance designed impress people who barely understand what they’re seeing, but nod their head in approval so nobody realizes they’re bluffing to hide their tech illiteracy. Everybody in the room is doing the same thing. The nerd with slide decks is grinning ear to ear at the approval. Maybe he starts to believe in the mythology that he might be a unicorn himself. It’s exercise in collective delusion. It needs to work because everybody involved is getting crazy rich. So the delusion must go on.
You don’t have your plumber come in every year and redo to all the pipes. Each time adding another superfluous section that serves naught but to make work for him. You sure don’t let him install a coin operated meter so he gets a cut of your water bill every time you need to flush, and then praise him like he’s the second coming of Jesus. He might be Jesus the plumber, but he’s no messiah. Maybe next years rework you’ll have him install a credit card swipe on your bathroom door.
Nobody is building entire trillion dollar multinational corporations around plumbing. Nobody is holding quarterly plumbers development conferences to announce the latest in pipework technology. In which the whole world streams it and watches in awe as they reveal the all new pipe join. Now for $999 a piece. You can’t call your plumber fast enough. Technology is cool but people can’t separate the science and engineering from the the trade work. They think the people making increasingly more cumbersome Rube Goldberg machines of code are the ones doing the science and engineering. Quite frankly I’m certain too many programmers think that too.
You’re right, no one is hiring a plumber to redo their entire plumbing in a home…but they are hiring them to fix leaks and unclog drains (patching) that’s what most programming is. Patching.
And most patching is fixing leaks (exploits/vulnerabilities) that can destroy your house.
A key difference is that engineering standards have grown to the point where we don’t hire a plumber to come multiple times to clear drains and patch leaks. The drains were built large enough and with proper materials to last for years without maintenance. We don’t have people constantly shoring up bridges either.
This is why some people don’t consider software engineering to be engineering.
Too many people justifying their existence by shipping unnecessary and poorly thought out features leads to unreliable, complex software that needs constant maintenance to keep it running.
Usually that’s on management, not the devs.
Yep, most of programming done today is reinventing the wheel by grabbing someone’s Github project and slapping aggressive monetization on it.
The experience is detecting your ad blocker and filling your page with a dickover.
I seriously and unironically believe whatever web developer has the gall, the temerity to imply that a news article in plain fucking text is an “Experience™”, and then fuck up loading that plain text, something webpages have been able to do flawlessly since the invention of the web, should be taken out back and shot.
Your disgust is valid. But the developer generally has no gall, and no agency. The corporation tells them to pack and monetize the clickthroughs like feeding puppies into a sausage machine. The developer never thought that would be the job.
In fact, every time you don’t see something like this, it’s because some developer said, “Enough, I won’t do this,” putting their job (and their next rent payment) on the line. I lost two jobs that way.
Don’t let them divide us. The fascist oligarchs are the villains.
Web developer here. Theres no say for us in this matter, best-case a tech lead says its not supported by the current tech-stack, but in any other case its management and marketing that decides what features get added to the site, we just build it.
Best we can do to fight back is make the experience terrible for users or even better just unprofitable.
It’s kind of your problem if your connection can’t handle 14 GB of trackers and ads, pleb.

i get shit like that frequently because scripts don’t run here unless whitelisted. usually either the content requires scripts to show itself, or blocked ads are blocking the rest of the page load, or both.
it’s at this point where i scoop-up the headline and drag it over to the ddg search box in the browser toolbar and find a different source. there almost always is.
I’m terrified of the day that some company starts partly copying articles and changing key details after the first plagiarized paragraph. I will be royally fucked when that day comes
