I like the idea of Android stealing enough market share that Apple is forced to be more open.

The one that really blew my mind was the Find My network. Android tried to cooperate with Apple, and Apple stalled and dragged it out until Android gave up.

The effect was that Android got “Find My” about a year later than it would have otherwise, and the networks won’t be compatible. But isn’t Find My network compatibility relatively better for Apple? At worst there are places where Android and Apple devices split market share evenly. In most of the world, Android has the larger network/market share. Apple was willing to sacrifice that win to stall Android rolling out a major feature for a year.

No. Most of the mods from Reddit stayed on Reddit to desperately cling to “power”.

It generally takes about five minutes a month to mod a medium (Lemmy) sized community. I have to beg people to volunteer, and they often turn me down.

Our top mods seem to be great people, but I’m still trying to informally limit how many communities they have in favor of having more diversity and fresh blood. But it’s difficult when they’re willing to actively help out, and I have to go beg otherwise active people who turn me down.

Please, if you don’t like super mods and you want to actually help, go take a look at some of your favorite communities right now. See if the mods have posted in the last couple months. If they haven’t, talk to me about modding that community. Mention this post.

Lemmy gives away for free what Reddit is desperately trying to put up walls on so they can sell it, but I wouldn’t call it “private” because it’s monetized.

Lemmy is the opposite of privacy, and that just makes sense if you 🤔.

New instances basically suck down everything as the most normal use case. That’s what activitypub is for.

It doesn’t help that the vegans are right. The meat industry is a nightmare, terrible for the environment, and pretty bad for our health.

It’s insane that most Americans eat meat every day.

If I could put 100% tax on meat tomorrow I would, but that’s political suicide, so it’ll never happen. It’d be easier to adjust than you think. There are plenty of delicious vegetarian options, and it’d be a lot easier to choose those if they were more common.

I eat meat because it’s culturally acceptable, delicious, ubiquitous, and I don’t believe I can make a noticeable difference. But that doesn’t mean I think it’s right.

It’s tiered pricing. All the chains are doing it now. Jump through hoops or pay double.

Which isn’t a bad idea, but I’d still want some kind of parental controls like Android has to limit screen time. I don’t need Netflix.com to be all or nothing, but I certainly don’t want it to be four hours a day either.

I don’t think Google Podcasts required that much maintenance. However it didn’t have the ads that YouTube Music does.

The entire scalping/resale market arguably shouldn’t exist, instead tickets should be refundable within reason, at which point the organiser can issue and sell new tickets.

I had to think about this for a minute, but this is exactly the way to handle it. Don’t allow direct transfers at all. You don’t get to pick who gets your tickets (and therefore scalping can’t exist.). But you still can refund your tickets (maybe with a SMALL fee) up to a couple hours before the event. I hope we don’t need legislation to say they have to be sold for the same price they were originally offered for. We don’t want an incentive for Ticketmaster to steal people’s tickets when a venue sells out.
