Probably a noob question, but I wonder if someone has experience with that. I am looking to buy a TV and I wonder is it makes sense to buy one with decent HDR capabilities, when my plan is to watch pirated movies from my Linux device via HDMI. Is that technically possible? Is it easy?

If it matters, I am on Fedora silverblue.

best way to play back HDR movies, especially Dolby vision, is to dual boot LibreElec, specifically THIS build that is getting DV+FEL to work on intel, amd and nvidia graphics.

within a standard Linux operating system these days you can get easily basic HDR working in MPV or kodi etc, but more advanced formats are poorly supported. that said, a decent modern TV can usually run jellyfin, plex, emby, kodi etc. and play the files directly off your computer via SMB/NFS or a usb disk with reasonable format support. getting full lossless atmos audio and the best HDR support requires specific dedicated players, or the libreelec option above if you are OK dual booting.

works on my jellyfin with the two computers in my family with hdr monitors, and the newer tv with hdr. the older one struggles to play hd sdr video but possibly it could still be used as a monitor and have an sbc capable of hd hdr playback actually play the stream.

In this day and age, the question should no longer be “will <x> run on Linux?”, rather “what’s the best method for doing <x> on Linux?”

Because - again, in this day and age - Linux is extremely capable and runs damn near the entire internet.

Yes the ARR stack works flawlessly in docker on Linux. Paired with qbittorrent and even public trackers you can watch to your hearts content. It’s easy to find guides in your favorite search engine.

It’s important to use a VPN if you don’t want to get disconnected from your ISP.

I don’t use HDMI though I run jellyfin on the server and as a client on Roku and Xbox over the home WAN. Here’s Jellyfin HDR guide
