Now you know how linux users feel
but there aren’t any games on linux ☹️
There are if you use steam. I have yet to run into a game I couldn’t play. Granted, I only play like three games, but still.
I’ve been astounded at Linux support since I got my steam deck. Gaming on Linux has come a long way for sure.
Nearly every game that runs on Windows runs just fine on Linux nowadays, with some setup on your first run.
Nobara os makes it even simpler.
saved for my transition later
same
I feel like non-steam games often dont work or dont run very well… I use Wine so if you have something better for launching exe I would be glad to get it
Have you checked out Lutris?
Basically the only major ones not running on Linux are the ones using a ring 0 anticheat at this point.
What does nobara do?
([CurrentYear]+1) will definitely be the year of the Linux desktop!
🥲
Tbh Lemmy (and the rest of the fediverse) isn’t ready for mainstream use 😔
I’m not sure I agree with that. It isn’t ready to provide a first class luxury airliner experience - and that is a requirement for some, but if you’re okay with a bumpy ride, Lemmy is absolutely serviceable.
Lemmy has a wild west style vibe to it. Anything is possible, and that offers excitement to many people. There was an unfortunate bug regarding hot posts that emerged while the Reddit protest is going on, but that bug has been fixed (even if the fix hasn’t been rolled out everywhere yet).
That and the ‘function over form’ look of the default website / PWA is not beautiful, but again quite serviceable.
The social communities are in flux, due to the general expansion, but that also means there’s great opportunity.
One thing that it sorely lacks is easy video upload… it might have that in the near future, but let’s face it, it’ll be disabled by default on all instances… just takes way too much space. And most memes nowadays are actually videos, so… no, mainstream users will never come here. And that could actually be a good thing if you think about it, it filters out users by design, not bad IMO.
that’s definitely part of the excitement for me now, but will I stay here? not unless things keep updating. How is Lemmy moderated though? That wild west feel is a double edged sword and tends to turn into a cesspool on the internet before too long.
I don’t think that will happen here, there is just not a big enough userbase, and I don’t think there ever will be. It’s just not attractive to the every day users, not flashy, no video upload, complicated to work with (cuz of federation). This will never be as mainsteram as FB, Twitter, Instagram.
Reddit didn’t even support image uploads until, what, 2016? That didn’t hold it back. It’s why imgur came to exist, in fact.
We’re not in 2016 man, people are now used to the platforms having image and video upload 🤷. If they don’t have that, they tend to look away. Uploading to 3rd party hosting is for advanced user, not your every day Joe.
Definitely agree that lemmy has a wild west feel to it right now, and like you, i love it.
But most people have very low tolerance for interruption to their experience and just want it to work, no matter who is running it. For my part, I’d like to see the process of searching for new communities and accounts get smoothed out, and maybe process of linking to a post on another instance.
On the other side of the coin, a lot of the tools needed for effective moderation on a large scale are still in the process of being made. Beehaw defederating from 2 other large instances threw a wrench in the works, but hopefully they’ll refederate once better tools are added.
We’re probably the early adopters But still, that’s like living in the future
It’s cool and exciting

How did you find out about lemmy? I’ve long since lost the knowledge to find new cool internet stuff, until it becomes more popular, like lemmy

New to Lemmy. Still taking a bit to get “used” to it (look & feel, navigation, type of community, etc) but enjoying it so far.
Find not a large, but very nerdy community and follow it. You’ll find many more small and nerdy communities. And some of them will be focused on cool/odd internet places.
For me, it was a linux-oriented youtube section, where I first find out about hackernews, r/internetisbeatiful and many FOSS and privacy-related subreddits.
The more I’m starting to understand how to navigate it all, the easier it’s getting to leave it behind and not look at it
Yeah, now that I’m more comfortable, Lemmy is great. Just need the bodies here to make it more active.
And we’re getting them. Holy shit, have you seen how quickly lemmy is picking up users?
Oh yeah, I didn’t quite grasp it until I saw the latest graph where each point measures a single day
Same never would´ve guessed it two weeks earlier but I´m not looking back to Reddit although using it for 13 years. Lemmy is a great and new alternative.
now i’ve wrapped my head around the federation stuff, i find it super cool! finding an instance you like and want to use is part of the fun and i enjoy seeing users from all different instances participating.
I’m doing my part o7

What’s o7?
It’s a man saluting.
o7 Commander.
Thanks 👍.
The o is a head and the 7 is an arm. It’s meant to look like somebody performing a salute.
ie: Marine Captain Space Ranger Robert, reporting for duty, sir! o7
Thanks 👍.

I haven’t posted much on Reddit about this whole kerfuffle lately (I feel myself winding down over there) but I got wildly different results when mentioning Kbin/Lemmy on different threads and different subreddits. Sometimes huge upvotes and positivity, sometimes huge downvotes and anger. Such is Reddit when the hivemind hasn’t settled on a narrative yet I suppose.
I can understand why some people get angry, if they personally are preferring to stay on Reddit for whatever reason. These new things “threaten” their comfortable and familiar lifestyle, they’re an “enemy team.” Their anger is stupid, but understandable. I can understand stupid.

I honestly don’t understand the desire to entice people from reddit.
If people want to leave, they will.
I wouldn’t have found this site if not for a post on reddit. If nobody talks about it elsewhere nobody will find it. Anyway I was mostly just commenting and trying to correct people who were trying to make lemmy and kbin seem really hard to use.
Same here. Keep telling people; lots of them come over.
Specially when you mention Sync for Lemmy, or Memmy for Lemmy and Artemis for kbin/Lemmy which are both heavily inspired by Apollo.
Even made this quick summary of what’s going on reddit and how Lemmy/Kbin works to copy/paste on any relevant thread; seems to be quite effective. Feel free to use it.
Yup, that’s how I found it.
Yeah the operator of the instance I made an account on shared that their instance is open to signups on a random reddit thread about one of the apps potentially shutting down so I decided to take the leap then. I’ve found myself on Mastodon now too!
Did they not implement shadow bans for mentioning Lemmy?
Depends on the sub probably, I didn’t link directly to either site except on r/redditalternatives
Specially effective on subs with weird posting rules (john oliver etc etc) where people are confused.
I’ve mentioned Lemmy before and some people just responded to my comments today
but I think I’ve only mentioned Lemmy once on there maybe twice
Ah well, it’s their loss honestly. Plenty of great little sites out there, they probably just want to lurk and not contribute
Yeah. Even with the low usercount, people are SO active on here.
To be fair, every time I click on a Reddit post on my home page, it is usually filled with all kinds of comments that I can and can’t think of already. So not much incentive to leave a comment instead of upvote/downvote.
But here probably because of the low user count, essentially we are the one that are leaving those “all kinds of comments”.
I’m active on here so I don’t have to be, IRL!
It’s actually fun
Yeah it’s more fun when you don’t have a string of 5 trolls after your comment telling you how much you suck.
While most want to hear “readed” fails (or see they’re errors being recognized), they hate to hear the promotion of an alternative when they just want to see the downfall
