Reddit is definitely not the final evolution of the internet board. It goes without saying that we can do better. And when a better iteration comes along nobody will even need to ask the Reddit users to switch as theyll naturally migrate like we always have. And then eventually that thing will be decrowned for something better too

Here’s the forum discussion on including Librewolf as a recommended browser:
https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/librewolf-browser-firefox-fork/148
It’s quite long as the topic has been open since 2022; all other posts about Librewolf are closed by mods and the discussion is redirected here.
The LibreWolf Debian repository was down all of last week. I peeked over at their forum and it looks like the team is really struggling to maintain the project since a key member left. Its struggles to keep up with security updates is why its no longer being recommended by Privacy Guides. I’m trying out Mullvad browser right now to see how it fairs

I’ve just always wondered why a community never formed to fork it
Steven McTowelie@lemm.eeto Android@lemmy.world•Google, Qualcomm will support 8 years of Android updates with latest chipsEnglish92·3 months agoA solution is to use GrapheneOS, a privacy focused and security hardened android ROM. They support some very old phones (like some almost a decade old), and continue to support all google pixels going forward. With GrapheneOS you will continue to get security upgrades ported over for a lot longer, and the phone will run better than ever de-googled!

Steven McTowelie@lemm.eeto Memes@lemmy.ml•Fusion of !memes@lemmy.world and !memes@lemmy.ml?English7·3 months agoI’m on lemm.ee! It seems to have a good balance of users and sensible defederation. On mobile, the app you use make a world of a difference too. Both Jerboa and Thunder (Android) were mid tier experiences, but now I’m using Boost and it’s phenomenal!
Steven McTowelie@lemm.eeto Linux@lemmy.ml•Planning to switch to Linux for my next PCEnglish61·3 months agoI’m going to go against the grain here and recommend that you NOT use Mint. I’ve been using a linux for a month now, so I’m new to it like you.
My first time trying Linux was Mint, and I didn’t like it at all. There was too much crap downloaded on it, and it abstracted the underlying systems too much, so I found it all very confusing. I suggest that you download a distro that Mint is based on, and then install the actual stuff you want on it.
Mint is based on Ubuntu, which is based on Debian. I decided to go with Debian as a total noob and it makes waaay more sense to me this time around. I enjoy customizing it to my liking rather than Mint doing it all for me—often in ways I don’t like.

My time on lemmy.world was really poor, and I came away not thinking too highly of Lemmy as a whole. My experience in different instances has been a world of difference, and I finally get fantastic content in my feeds and am fully on board with Lemmy

Any ideas how I can fix that in the configuration files?

How's your Friday going?English5·3 months agoI can’t entirely recall the precise details now, but I was trying to uninstall Nvidia and Mesa packages to fix some driver issues. Some mesa-related packages were remaining, and I couldn’t figure out why, so I manually typed their names in and purged them, then proceeded to watch python, the desktop environment — everything — all uninstall haha.
Steven McTowelie@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Jellyfin is not just good... but *better* than Plex now?!English134·3 months agoSorry, I misread. What is bad about the UX exactly? You don’t need to customize anything if you don’t want to; “it just works”. And I dont follow you on how having the option to customize things makes it a bad user experience. You’re assuming the native UI is bad for some reason.
I’ve used Plex a lot too back in the day but there’s nothing it provides that Jellyfin doesn’t do out of the box + self-hosted + for free.

Steven McTowelie@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Jellyfin is not just good... but *better* than Plex now?!English252·3 months agoYou can change the UI design to whatever you want with a custom CSS. Can make your own or there’s a plethora of themes on GitHub. I remember trying one that replicated the Netflix app, and don’t hold me to it but I think I saw a Plex one as well.
Also, regarding the metadata, there are options that auto populate it for you. Idk how it does it, but my haphazard library of torrents all had accurate metadata AND it downloaded the subtitle files as well.

Tried it again a few months ago and it worked flawlessly! Now I host movies, shows, music, ebooks, and audiobooks for a handful of friends and family. My jellyfin instance is probably siphoning $120/month from Netflix’s subscription revenue lol

What alternatives do we have? There’s grapheneOS, but even that is placing too much trust in Google’s proprietary aspects of the hardware. I wish non-android linux phones were at a usable state.
I’m so close to ditching android and smart phones entirely in favour of a dumb Nokia and maybe a mini tablet for when I need the power.
