For photos and videos, Immich. I don’t really care about backups for contacts, messages, or games, so I just do photos and videos.

40·3 months agoRAID is carrying a spare tire in your car. Backups are like having an extra car in the garage in case your primary geta totaled.
It’s possible you’ll never need either one, but if you pop a flat, a whole extra car is overkill.
It’s not a perfect metaphor, since most people don’t have a spare car.

Linux@lemmy.ml•App for downsizing MP3s automatically when copying to a phone?
1·3 months agoThis is a valid question, but it’s hard to answer because it depends on the security of your own network. Tailscale creates a secure tunnel directly into your home network, but if your home network is compromised then it’s not secure.
Could Tailscale be compromised? I think it would be difficult but not impossible. It’s safe enough for personal use, certainly, but I wouldn’t use it to protect state secrets.
And if you have it on your phone, and someone gets access to your phone, then they can access your home network. How secure is your phone? Do you use biometrics or a password keeper? Do you leave your laptop unlocked?
Security is a mixed topic, and it’s impossible to pull one thread from the sweater without unraveling the whole thing. Sometimes the illusion of security is as effective as actually being secure, and sometimes it isn’t at all.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•5-minute oil change placeEnglish
15·6 months agoThe reason that an oil change should take time is that it takes a while for all of the used oil to drain out. That’s why commenters are recommending you do it yourself, because you can leave the car for 20 minutes to just drain. Then you remove the filter, and don’t be surprise if more oil drains out. Replace the filter and then refill with oil.
Quickie Lube places that promise a 5 minute change are either lying about the time or lying about changing the oil. You would also control how frequently the filters are changed. You don’t have to change the filter as often as the oil, but certainly every other oil change. I replace mine every time, but I recognize that’s probably unnecessary.
All in, the process will take you about an hour, maybe longer the first time you do it. A pro with all of the equipment laid out and a proper garage can cut it to 30 minutes at best.

Linux@lemmy.ml•The FOSS 'Someday' Thread: Projects On Your Radar But Not Your System (Yet)
10·6 months agoUntil you confirm that you have a working backup, your backup is theoretical.
Plex is still fine if you’re a single user. They’re starting to charge each user for sharing, which is bullshit but I guess they want to discourage sharing? Jellyfin is a fine alternative.
I ask for summaries and examples for things I understand well but struggle to explain. Sometimes it’s very helpful, and sometimes it’s just deranged nonsense.
That’s why I’m less likely to ask it to about something I don’t already know. How would I know if the answer is accurate or coherent? At least with something like Wikipedia, I can track down a source and look for foundational truth, even if it is hidden under layers of bias.
“I didn’t ask for a hint, I was just making an observation. Damn.”

Android@lemmy.world•Your Android Phones Aren’t ‘Google’ Anymore, They’re All ‘Gemini’English
10·9 months agoI used to work in home automation, and we didn’t do any voice activated shit (or cloud based at all if we could avoid it). When customers would ask for it, I would point out that the most commonly spoken word to a voice recognition device is “Cancel.” Even when it works, it’s just a switch you flip with a special phrase. People want Jarvis, but they end up with a glorified Clapper.

I have a big head, so every pair of headphones I’ve used will eventually break there. At least these can be repaired.
