  • The reason that an oil change should take time is that it takes a while for all of the used oil to drain out. That’s why commenters are recommending you do it yourself, because you can leave the car for 20 minutes to just drain. Then you remove the filter, and don’t be surprise if more oil drains out. Replace the filter and then refill with oil.

Quickie Lube places that promise a 5 minute change are either lying about the time or lying about changing the oil. You would also control how frequently the filters are changed. You don’t have to change the filter as often as the oil, but certainly every other oil change. I replace mine every time, but I recognize that’s probably unnecessary.

All in, the process will take you about an hour, maybe longer the first time you do it. A pro with all of the equipment laid out and a proper garage can cut it to 30 minutes at best.

  • I ask for summaries and examples for things I understand well but struggle to explain. Sometimes it’s very helpful, and sometimes it’s just deranged nonsense.

That’s why I’m less likely to ask it to about something I don’t already know. How would I know if the answer is accurate or coherent? At least with something like Wikipedia, I can track down a source and look for foundational truth, even if it is hidden under layers of bias.

  • They’re both built on the reputation of their leaders. Good coaches recruit good players, making them look like better coaches. Good preachers gather more followers which makes their bullshit more believable.

The great irony is that in both environments, the ego of the leader is almost certainly over-inflated, and the institution would be just hunky dory without them. Penn State found a new coaching staff. The Catholic Church will elect a new Pope.

The people doing the cover-up will justify the lies by telling themselves they are doing it for the greater good, but really they just want to protect themselves.

  • That’s fair, but there’s a wide gulph between transient homeless and wealthy enough to pay all your bills and still travel the world. The overwhelming majority of people in the middle have to work full time to maintain their standard of living, and even the destitute will have responsibilities that prevent them from slinging a pack over their shoulder and riding the rails.

I agree that people should be encouraged to get out more and see more of the world, but that’s like telling people to eat more fresh vegetables and home cooked meals because processed fast food is unhealthy. People who can and do reap the benefits, but not everyone who would, can.

You could chime in that you grew up poor on a farm where your grandma’s garden was your only source of food, and that wouldn’t counter the point that for most people, fresh produce is either unavailable, too expensive, or too time-consuming to be a regular part of their diet. Likewise, most people cannot drop everything and become nomads hitchiking across the lands like fucking David Banner or Jarod the Pretender.

To put it another way, Travel is a luxury enjoyed by the unencumbered, whether by wealth or absence. It is not an option available to everyone.
