  • There really isn’t a complicated discussion to be had unless you needlessly complicate things. There’s a big difference between having, say, better monitor or headphones in terms of resolution or sound quality vs having a monitor or headphones that add extra features.

It’s like saying that AR glasses that visualize a ball’s trajectory should be allowed in tennis or football because players can already invest in better rackets or shoes.

The detection problem is not unsolvable. First, you can forbid people that are using that monitor from matchmaking. You can find your monitor’s model number using software so that would be trivial. For a more nuanced approach, you can examine players’ reaction times and ban people that got too good too fast.

I disagree with (1), especially for parents that cook the same 10-20 meals over and over. Even if the time it takes to cook a certain meal on your kitchen is different than the one stated at the recipe, you can note it down and get a reliable average after 5 tries.

It’s annoying that some parents can’t even do that to minimize the fights around dinner time and shift all the blame to the kids.

  • Do you also consider remembering to take your wallet and phone with you a hassle? You’re creating an issue where there isn’t one.

But OK, have a smartphone and use it to take photo-notes, I do that too. But I also try to use libre alternatives for software even if they are not as good as their proprietary counterparts, because that’s the right thing to do for a lot of reasons.

Also funny that you’re mentioning lawnmowers, because tractors have a huge issue with proprietary software, with farmers having to resort to hacking their (bought!) vehicles in order to repair them, to avoid paying thousands of dollars to John Deere for “authorized” (read: extorted) repairs.

You agree that the corpos are “evil” and yet you do nothing to avoid using their software, you’re not willing to be discomforted in the slightest for a good cause. That’s worse than Stallman’s approach, in my book.

  • Why didn’t you bring a small notepad, easily fitted in a pocket or small bag to take notes of things to remember, instead of a camera? Dumb phones may have had note functionalities too, I’m not sure.

Stallman gives plenty of alternatives instead of just forbidding technology, but you’re gonna brand them ‘non-viable’ so there’s no reason to give you a list.

What do you mean by socialism? Because the goal of socialism is to gradually arrive at communism. I don’t know a lot of Marxist theory but what you say doesn’t make much sense. No one (except for anarchists and maybe “new leftists”) wants to jump to communism directly.

Unless by socialist you mean social-democrat.
