Android@lemdro.id•Motorola phones have started hijacking the Amazon app to insert affiliate codes [Video]English
5·18 days agoThe article speculates that this isn’t intentional by Motorola. I’ve also seen mentions speculating a compromised library
Secondly, we can speculate as to what’s going on – and that’s what the following is, speculation and conjecture. While many would quickly, understandably, point the finger at Motorola here, my gut says something else is going on, and that it might not be a decision Motorola actually planned out. The redirect through a seemingly fake website and affiliate code of an influencer that has no obvious ties to Motorola is just too bizarre to ignore.

21·19 days agoThe links are dead for me, maybe it’s set to private? The first one doesn’t open anything, and the second one takes me to a login page
From what we can see on our end, this account doesn’t match the pattern of the other harassment accounts
I like some of these things, but I’d be ok with them being optional toggles. I remember seeing a Firefox fork with extensive customization options for the UI
Personally
- rounded corners make it easier to see what is contained in what. It gives more information than just having everything meet at corners
- gradients and blurs match the rest of my UI 😄

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•If I have some spare compute, are there ways I can use it to help an existing fediverse instance?English
71·24 days agoThat might be interesting! If you build on this idea, it would be cool to see ping times with location data, so instance operators can see what the performance is like with real world data. That was something we were concerned about when trying out different alternatives when leaving CloudFlare.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Bitwarden's new CEO has a Private Equity background, removed 'Inclusion' and 'Always Free' from their website -- because of course he didEnglish
811·29 days agoI think the original title was more helpful because it shows that this is a recent development. Maybe you can add “new CEO”?
Bitwarden scrubs ‘Always free’ and ‘Inclusion’ values from its website as longtime execs step down
In February, longtime CEO Michael Crandell moved to an advisory role, according to LinkedIn, with no announcement from the company. His replacement, Michael Sullivan, former CEO of both Acquia and Insightsoftware, touts his experience with “all facets of mergers and acquisitions” on his own LinkedIn page, including experience working with leading private equity firms.
CFO Stephen Morrison also left Bitwarden in April, replaced by former InVision CEO Michael Shenkman. Both Crandell and Morrison joined the company in 2019. Kyle Spearrin, who started Bitwarden as a fun hobby project in 2015, remains the company’s CTO.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How do you feel about distributing small Linux tools via GitHub and Gumroad?
3·1 month agoWhat if you distributed the tool under the normal channels, and then used gumroad (or anything similar) to sell an optional key that adds a little visual indicator or removes a nag message. I’ve seen a few other open source projects do that. Grayjay for example
I cross posted this to !selfhosted@lemmy.world, I hope that was ok! I figured it would be good to spread the knowledge
The eyes are closed as if to say resignedly
“Goodbye cruel fluffy world.”

Linux@lemmy.ml•I used wget on Ubuntu to clone pages from piefed to build Zyke, a Reddit alternative
13·2 months agoWhy don’t you just implement federation normally instead of taking this roundabout way of doing things? As long as your site contributes content back, and makes it clear where content is from, other projects like piefed and lemmy would be happy to have your project join the network.
Continuing like this will likely get you IP blocked from wherever you’re mirroring content from.
Also these platforms are open source. You are allowed to copy and modify things for your own projects, as long as you follow the basic rules in the license.

On that note, I should replace the AI generated community icon.
edit: Done, the icon is now the sushi bird. It works on two levels, since it also looks like a thumb nail 😄

Technology@beehaw.org•The blue light from your phone isn't ruining your sleep
3·2 months agoThey explain where the confusion comes from in the first two paragraphs.
Different wavelengths of light do affect some biological processes, and circadian rhythms are affected by light. From what I understand, there is some consensus that the brightness of the light source can affect sleep. There is no consensus on whether some wavelengths of light are better than others, but it was a reasonable thing to explore.
Did you try Calibre Web or Calibre Web Automated

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•GitHub - damontecres/Wholphin: An OSS Android TV client for JellyfinEnglish
2·3 months agoNice, I had no idea
I tried out Fladder, Moonfin, and Wholphin
- Fladder does load, but it crashes on certain pages for me. My guess is that my hardware isn’t powerful enough to handle something that it’s trying to do
- Moonfin and Wholfin are both beautiful with an intuitive UI. Between the two, I liked Wholfin the best. It has a preview when customizing the home page, which is very helpful compared to the back and forth guess and test with the other ones. I also prefer it’s UI and default settings over the others
I replaced Findroid with Wholphin on ours

Fladder was working on it, but last I tried it was still too unstable to use

Apparently you can also force your chosen image on other people’s devices when you call them.

It might also be the kind of data center that is being built. Cheaper data centers are noisier, inefficient with water, etc
Working class areas may already be distrustful towards large companies coming along and using up all of the local resources
