If they were more about UNIX than freedom, that could make sense back then. These days, you miss out on loads on of open stuff and are very much a third class citizen. After Linux and Windows, as the platform has neither freedom or a large user base. Macports seams to regularly have talks about how they are shunned and ignored.

Exactly. I don’t even think it’s that different to be honest, it’s just not identical to PS and comes from a different windowing school of thought.
It needs to be faster and more stable. Crashes and slowness are killer issues. Slowness is single core issue. You can see one core working it’s ass off, but the other like 15, sitting doing nothing. Plus it freezes during that often because it’s not async/multi-threaded enough. Crashes, well that’s just bad, but in this case it’s normally when even 48GB RAM isn’t enough. Bloody curved geometry from external sources with massive messes. Needs more exchanging files methods that isn’t mesh based. But also mesh rationalization tools are need too.

I’ve been in rooms for people forced to switch from PS to GIMP for corporate cost cutting. Every time I went to help someone on something else (animation or exporter related), I’d hear “GIMP can’t do X” and “GIMP can’t do Y”. I’d go over and show it could and how. It was never even stuff that hard. Layer stuff often. GIMP gets a lot of hate I just don’t think is justified.
It’ll catch on at some point. KiCAD did. Blender did. Many other FOSS apps have!
Gimp is intuitive to me. I grew up on RISC OS, not Windows, and only later learned Photoshop. Switching was easy for me, and that was before I got into FOSS. It was just free and legal.
I’ve seen lots of people from a Windows only background struggle with it. I agree it’s not like a normal Windows app. Maybe single window mode helps, but I’m not in a place to judge.
I can only speak of on Linux. If you know the disk is bad, clone it, with ddrescue, and fix the clone. But in future RAID and backup remotely. Also, next gen filesystems like ZFS and Btrfs for check sums and self healing and subvolumes with send/receive deltas between them.
Also depends on the country. It isn’t everywhere. Non-commercial file-sharing is legal in a number of European countries and I’m sure elsewhere.
It could be taken as a sign of the health of the democracy’s function and technically literacy of the population. In a society of tech heads with a highly functional democracy, it would be DRM measures that would be illegal…
Just a follow up to this.
So I never ended up contacting O2 to say “please stop this”, I just used Wireguard to home and ignored it. Until the local Morrison’s wifi started doing the same thing but worse and I couldn’t event Wireguard round it.
So I finally just bought a domain and setup my Apache to redirect the old duckdns to the new domain.
So far this all seams to be working great.
Guake. Has been for years. I am in and out the terminal all the time, so F12 works well for me. Plus I used to play Quake and used the in game terminal to do all kinds of things. Plus I’m an old RISC OS kid and F12 was the key to get the “star line”.

That’s good, though I still think it’s a problem they exist. I mean a lot of apps are a webpage wrapped in an app anyway, so why not just a webpage and skip the platform dependence.
Increasingly lots of stuff won’t work without all of the Google services. Banking apps won’t run on root devices or anything odd they detect.
Even without that, I can say how seamless it is.
The main problem is political not technical. The market had been allowed to become a duopoly and too many critical things now need an app on an Android or Apple phone. The worse I know is banks needing an app for authentication for their online banking. No separate security device anymore, those are ewaste apparently.
Public EV chargers where you can only control them from an app.
Riding book at theme parks. The cases are growing. Even the app is just wrapper of hidden web page!
Frankly I think regulation is required to get competition in the market. Not the only tech one either. Why is it so hard for law makers to see monopoly in tech?
Those dependencies adenoid and no kept Upton date, unlike deb/rpm installed stuff. Best sandbox to not compromise your system. Also hope that sandboxing is done right…
Yer, I used Rethink DNS in F-Droid to test this already. Basically it’s fine when the DNS is encrypted.
Edit: I was wrong. It was just working again generally.Even with DoH DNS, I still see “Access denied” going to duckdns.org and my sites still don’t work. Direct IP works. Not sure how this block is working yet.
They should be standard protocols and you should be able to change server to competition. Be great if it was all open, but failing that, standards, competition and right to repair.
