Switched my parents to mint probably 10 years ago and I haven’t heard any complaints, just had to remind them to update every so often and had to upgrade once EOL came. It has been the same with my very non technical girlfriend that switched to mint probably a year ago.

If you make sure they have supported hardware (and most of it is supported these days) my bet is you won’t have to support them at all.

Why on earth would anyone willfully install ChromeOS? I haven’t followed recent developments but I’ve always thought of it as very limiting, not to mention just as bad in terms of privacy as a Windows install.

Sounds to me like they just own one of these trackers. Just like the NSA controls nodes on the tor network.

A few months ago I needed a lot of music (flacs in my case) and while to can find almost anything on soulseek (including some amazing vinyl rips) some niche artists were missing.

So what I did is I made a free trial account on deezer, got everything I needed during the free month using this deezer scraper and cancelled the trial before it ended.

In most countries by the age of 6 or 7 most kids would be in school and sat in a chair for most of their waking hours. What sort of Captain Fantastic utopia with with sunshine, rainbows and developing muscles do you imagine contemporary childhood to be?

If by the age of 15, as the original comment suggested, a kid has never touched a screen they would be ostracised by their classmates and most likely have lasting trauma.

Of course it’s nice to spend weekends and holidays outside, but a blanket ban on screentime is something else completely.

Then again, parents are entitled to their own opinions and as I’ve said, it’s none of my business what these opinions are.

It’s none of my business how you decide to raise your children but I firmly believe screentime is not such a big deal. Engaging with corporate apps designed to be both addictive and extremely easy to use is.

I think giving a kid their own beater laptop with some linux distro to tinker with, break, learn how to type, play a few games, draw or whatever else interests them especially at an early age would help the child to engage with tech in a creative and productive way and not be afraid of messing with it.

My bet is that the most tech illiterate people that view LLMs and computers in general as some sort of magic are the most severely affected ones.

I have helped plenty of not-very-technical people switch to Linux and these kinds of vulnerabilities scare me the most when it comes to them.

I have a similar device, made around 2013, Atom CPU, 2 gigs of RAM, 32 gig emmc drive, no exandability.

I run Arch with QTile on it without much of a problem, though as others have mentioned, web browsing would be a pain with more than a few tabs open. Youtube is a no-go too.

I currently use it mostly to test an image editing GUI im working on. I know that if it is snappy on such poor hardware it would work perfectly fine anywhere else.

+1 I’m surprised nobody else mentioned it. Alpine seems to be able to run on anything.

Recently found out about ouch. Found it really useful for decompressing files in the terminal as I can’t seem to remember all the flags for tar, gzip, zip, rar and all the rest one may encounter which all seem to use different syntax.

I think it may be e a bit too early for that. At the current state it supports dynamic fetching of the feed in the background (quite buggy), paginating and displaying long posts and displaying top level comments only. At the current state it’s quite enough for me to enjoy a few (more like a few dozen) posts, but definitely not anywhere close to “awesome”.

I went with chafa as it’s terminal agnostic and supports various modes.

Then again, I’m not really sure a tui frontend needs high quality image rendering. Earlier I even considered going completely 1bit braille or just ASCII just so that the image doesn’t take all of the focus at the expense of the post body.

As mentioned by another commenter, I believe opening the full image in an external viewer is a much better solution, not to mention easier to implement.

Async programming is really quite hard to wrap your head around. Currently I’m mostly struggling with excessive memory consumption.

There is one named neonmodem overdrive but it is buggy.

I really don’t have any plans (or even a name) for the app, as I’ve just started playing around with pythorhead yesterday. I just hoped posting a prototype or a proof of concept might spark a discussion and maybe inspire someone much more competent than me.
