  • all the groups you cited? are they just toothless and making no impact because it happened way too late? or do they just have a very trash definition of what is intrusive? The major players still intrude all they like the second adblock isn’t there.

by the time ablock plus’s author tried to meet in a middleground advertising was already so far out of control that the users said “f that, no more” and most of us moved to ublock origin. these pricks need regulated into submission but it’ll never happen.

if it became reasonable, I’d turn off my blocking. ain’t gonna happen and we all know it no use pretending these companies are going to back off thier tactics.

  • there are sites where I WOULD HAVE whitelisted them from adblocking if they had not chosen to make them functionally unusable or not stop nag me me. take youtube. I never minded those ad breaks…but that constant box nagging me to try premium is not acceptable. And then they just had to keep ramping up the adds and are now being a big baby trying to wage war on adbocking. Result: no more youtube. ty for convincing me to not even visit anymore -slow clap- good job ahole.

and ever been to a fandom wiki? used to be named “wikia” so that people could confuse their brand with “wiki”. so many adds jammed into that thing browsers tend to choke if you aren’t adblocking.

I mean sure privacy is great to care about, but nobody even pretends to care about usability.

  • a lot of amazon sellers simply mark working pulls as “refubrished” when all they did was reformat or if you are lucky did a zero fill and check that the sectors weren’t bad.

I don’t trust reburbs that aren’t manufacturer refurbished on any site because its a huge difference in the testing and checking being done.

I do sometimes buy used drives, but I know what I am getting there vs “refurbished” - and there is usually a pricing difference which is why so many are dishonestly calling used drives refurbs.

you want to look at the sellers warranty policies. if if they actually have one besides amazons, the seller is confident in their own items longevity

  • I like how you just assumed win7.

I held off to - when 7’s support ended I moved to 8.1 and used openshell to make it look like 7. When 8.1 support ended I moved to 10 finally. I have to stay on a supported os for security and compliamce, but I make my employer pay for the upgrades and I don’t rush to the latest version - as long as its still supported I’m not moving.

I have a light at the end of the tunnel tho. My work tools are getting official linux versions. My work laptop has been windows but my home desktop has been linux. I may be able to drop windows entirely soon.

Edit: “he didn’t upgrade AND he disagreed with our hive minds opinion! Quick downvote!” How about you just Go back to reddit losers.

  • The issue and why it wss stupid wasn’t that it was a hook, its that it was attributing it to any app you opened when by definition a global hook is GLOBAL - you do users no gppd by scarinh them into thinking every global hool is malware frpm whatever random thing they ran. Those alert even would trigger on windows notepad. There is no reasom amy comnination of iser options should do this.

That was piss poor design and they evenyually walked it ba k after months of defending it by implying users amd security researchers were stupid on their forum, simce deleted. Its not in the wayback machine or I’d show you. Thier “fans” dogpiled on the topic after thier staff replied condesdingly.

  • Doesn’t lose them money, the used game woudn’t make them anyway which is whu they lobbied to try and make reselling used games require a royalty or be illegal for years before everything became digital.

As for emulation they lie and call emulation itself illegal (the copies may be but emulation itself is not) because then they can’t pull a disney and “vault” old games on their digital storefronts and make you buy it again when they decide to just up shut down the previous server when they launch the next console.

They don’t want us to own the things we pay for. They want us to rent them while not realizing it.

  • A busted up acer netbook on a shelf in my basement ran a Final Fantasy XI private server for several years till it died and I migrated to something sturdier.

Display was wrecked, keyboard destroyed, trackpad gone… but a single usb port and a vga port still worked so I was able to install an OS. then I removed those and only ever remoted into it. I actually removed the busted display and keyboard to it’d vent heat better - it ran pretty hot and the ventilation on that thing was designed poorly. The reason the keyboard died was actually heat related, melting its underside and warping it.

FFXI Private servers will run on a 2 decades old potato, so this worked until it finally died despite some seriously pathetic specs.

(1gb ram upgraded to 2gb, 1 ghz intel atom single core cpu, yes really)
