Especially when companies like Nintendo are somehow able to patent video game mechanics for something as ridiculous as riding on a flying creature.

Android@lemdro.id•Orgnanic Maps fork CoMaps Android preview release is outEnglish
51·7 months agoHere’s an open letter to the Organic Maps Shareholders with the most info:
https://www.comaps.app/news/2025-04-16/1/Which is referenced in the article here:
https://news.itsfoss.com/organic-maps-fork-comaps/And discussed on the OpenSource community here:
https://lemmy.world/post/30461779Basically some drama went down between the devs.
- Organic Maps has remained an LLC instead of transitioning to a Nonprofit.
- The projects finances have not been made public (they’re not required as an LLC) and there are concerns about how that money is being used.
- There was a decision made to include Kayak affiliate links in the app: https://web.archive.org/web/20250602163403/https://github.com/organicmaps/organicmaps/pull/6523
- The current board only consists of 3 people: Roman (@rtsisyk), Viktor (@vng), and Alexander (@biodranik). Major decisions can’t be made if only 1 person objects.
- The code for their map download service was closed sourced when an MIT license was removed and there were concerns about Organic Maps keeping in line with its open source values: https://web.archive.org/web/20250523094656/https://github.com/orgs/organicmaps/discussions/9837#discussioncomment-11569196
- When these concerns were raised, Alexander (@biodranik) revoked Roman’s (@rtsisyk) access https://web.archive.org/web/20250427142515/https://github.com/organicmaps/organicmaps/pull/9860
- The situation was resolved about a week later with the code for the map download service becoming public and With Roman’s access being restored.
Edit: ‘to’ the shareholders, not from
- Organic Maps has remained an LLC instead of transitioning to a Nonprofit.

Android@lemdro.id•Meager 8GB of RAM forces Pixel 9a to run “extra extra small” Gemini AIEnglish
2·10 months agoYeah, they definitely should focus on adding more RAM to their flagship phones, but smaller models are ideal for smartphones.
Smaller models are quicker to run and use up less battery. Besides, if they’re using some AI models I would rather it be run locally than have my data uploaded to some server somewhere (big assumption that they wouldn’t do that anyway, I know)… Or at the very least I can still run it even if the network goes down.

Android@lemdro.id•No one asked for this: Google is testing round keys in GboardEnglish
10·10 months agoI had the same problem, but I found that turning up the advanced Parameter Values in the Text Prediction settings helps to keep everything spelled correctly. I’m currently at 10.4 for the transformer strength and 8.3 for the autocorrect threshold and I’m noticing a lot less issues… I haven’t tested out turning it up all the way yet.
I also have the Transformer fine tuning enabled.
The swipe feature definitely needs some attention.
They do have a crowdsourced way of helping to improve their swipe prediction, more info on the link here: https://swipe.futo.org/
You’ll notice that even the swipe prediction for Heliboard comes from a closed source library.

Android@lemdro.id•Can chargers really damage your smartphone?English
331·1 year agoIf you read the article, it’s more of an “it depends” answer.
Most phones have safety mechanisms built in to them to protect from things like overcharging or overheating during fast charging. They will also default to a low power charging state if it doesn’t detect the correct signal from the charger.
There is a very rare possibility that a charger may not be grounded correctly and that’s why it’s recommended to stick with big brands if you’re going with a 3rd party charger.

Gaming@lemmy.ml•Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios Group is closing the Montreal studio it acquired just 8 months agoEnglish
13·2 years agoNot just the U.S.
Avalanche Studios has their headquarters in Sweden and they’re closing their studio in Canada (per this article). Additionally, Phoenix Labs (Dauntless & Fae Farm) is a Canadian game developer and they just let go of a significant number of developers and cancelled all future projects (about 3 weeks ago): https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/dauntless-developer-phoenix-labs-lays-off-employees-and-cancels-in-development-projects-says-its-the-last-resort-to-ensure-phoenix-labs-can-survive/While Microsoft was the one shutting down multiple Game Developers last month, those studios are also based all over:
Tango Gameworks - Japan
Alpha Dog Games - Canada
Arkane Studios - (Headquarters in France, but shutting down their Studio in the U.S.)
Roundhouse Studios - U.S.Edit: formatting

91·2 years agoWell… good thing I’ve been buying what I can through GOG… but this is terrible news, especially with the way Microsoft has been shutting down gaming studios recently.
Edit: meh, this just sounds like clickbait:
- The leak comes from an unknown and unreliable source in the gaming industry.
- Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard faced regulatory challenges, making the merger with Valve unlikely.

Gaming@lemmy.ml•Ubisoft insists yet again that its uncanny AI-generated 'NEO-NPCs' will make games 'more alive and richer', whatever that meansEnglish
93·2 years ago@sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works proposed this theory the other day, and I think it makes a lot of sense. A lot of journalists are feeling threatened by the onslaught of LLMs so I would expect to see a lot more news attempting to shine a negative light on LLMs in any way possible.

Gaming@lemmy.ml•Ubisoft insists yet again that its uncanny AI-generated 'NEO-NPCs' will make games 'more alive and richer', whatever that meansEnglish
41·2 years agoThere’s a place for AI in NPCs but developers will have to know how to implement it correctly or it will be a disaster.
LLMs can be trained on specific characters and backstories, or even “types” of characters. If they are trained correctly they will stay in character as well as be reactive in more ways than any scripted character could ever do. But if the Devs are lazy and just hook it up to ChatGPT with a simple prompt telling it to “pretend” to be some character, then it’s going to be terrible like you say.
Now, this won’t work very well for games where you’re trying to tell a story like Baldur’s Gate… instead this is better for more open world games where the player is interacting with random characters that don’t need to follow specific scripts.
Even then it won’t be everything. Just because an LLM can say something “in-character” doesn’t mean it will line up with its in-game actions. So additional work will need to be made to help tie actions to the proper kind of responses.
If a studio is able to do it right, this has game changing potential… but I’m sure we’ll see a lot of rushed work done before anyone pulls it off well.

Gaming@lemmy.ml•Helldivers 2 remains delisted in 177 countries and territories even as Sony backs down on PSN requirement, Arrowhead CEO says 'I won't rest in my desire to have it available everywhere'English
1·2 years agoThat makes sense, but I haven’t seen any official announcement from Steam saying that they did this. Only speculation from random people. Any documentation I can find just seems to point to this being a decision that’s made by the company releasing the game (or in this case Sony as the publisher).
Besides, only a few hours ago 3 new countries were added to the restricted list: https://steamdb.info/sub/137730/history/?changeid=23492083
I doubt that Steam is still trying to block additional countries given that Sony has already announced that the PSN account requirement is being withdrawn.

Gaming@lemmy.ml•Helldivers 2 Community Manager Seemingly Gone After PlayStation Login MeltdownEnglish
139·2 years agoBetter/additional info here: https://www.gamesradar.com/games/third-person-shooter/helldivers-2-community-manager-seemingly-fired-after-encouraging-negative-reviews-over-now-canceled-psn-mandate-i-knew-i-was-taking-a-risk-with-what-i-said/
Spitz:
“Generally it’s not a good idea to tell people to refund and leave negative reviews when you’re a community manager. TIL,” Spitz said. “I appreciate all the support and I appreciate even more that everyone can play the game again without restrictions. I knew I was taking a risk with what I said about refunding and changing reviews. I stand by it. It was my job to represent the community, that’s what I did.”
They added: “I wanted to work for Arrowhead because they’re my all-time favorite studio. I got that chance. I’m thankful for that opportunity. I’d happily continue working for them if I had the choice, but that isn’t up to me or anyone else in here. I can walk away happy and I don’t want anyone causing trouble on my behalf, especially not to people I still have a lot of care and respect for.”
This definitely sounds like Sony wanted them out and Arrowhead wanted them to stay.
