They’ve implemented a prototype, but it hasn’t been brought to market yet, so we’re probably not talking about the same thing if I had to guess. Imo backend FOSS needs a complete rethink with an easy way to manage one’s own digital stewardship. Root is extremely useful for customizing the OS and running certain types of apps. It won’t really do much for your average user and does degrade security depending on how root access was gained/obtained. It’s going to be a balance. Also keep in mind a handful of apps (like banking apps) will do a root check before loading the application and refuse to let you access it if it determines your device is rooted.

Tdlr: Rooting is great if you need it for something, just be sure to understand the downsides and don’t bother if you don’t have a specific use case for root access.
