There isn’t any individual, institution, or system which could manage the interaction between AGI and every human who has access to it. LLMs are already manipulating people to do extreme things. There’s no telling what AGI and a few million idiots might do.

Technology@beehaw.org•Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges

Is this a parody of the kind of idiot who would post something like this?
Ending capitalism would be the easy part. It would be cutting off a hydra head from the body of hierarchy. The forces to recreate the system would be stronger than the forces to invent a new one in a time of chaos. Daydreaming about violence is childish and probably the result of watching too much military propaganda as a kid. People have to want to change before they change, making them change suddenly makes most people reactionary.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Metal Gear Solid 4 can finally be played without emulator or PS3
8·2 months agoFINALLY
I would place this one in place 5 out of the 5 games in the MGS series, but considering it’s one of the best game series of all time it’s still one of my all time classics. Be prepared for more cutscene than game which require a PhD in Metal Gear lore to comprehend, but the gameplay can be very satisfying. It’s a great finale to the original timeline. 9/10.

Technology@beehaw.org•Chinese humanoid robots smash human records in 100m sprint and high jump at Beijing robot games

I’m aware that this information wouldn’t be so interesting to the present apparatus of Western hegemony if it wasn’t to their advantage to spread it. There are plenty of atrocities the US supports directly which tend not to get as much news coverage. I chose Wikipedia because it’s a general amalgam of hundreds of different compromised sources rather than link any individual news source or government office. I have yet to see any evidence that contradicts what these highly biased sources say, only that I should believe a different biased source offering no evidence at all because the US is more evil (It is more evil, I agree).
The original claim was the meme, I said that internment camps are not at the same level as extermination camps or a campaign of elimination (the full text of what I said is on the mod-log, don’t want to break the rule I broke again by saying more), people asked me to prove that there were internment camps and I offered the well-known Xianjiang camps as an example. Since that exchange the primary argument I’ve had is that I fell for western propaganda, which I admit is possible. So far evidence to the contrary of the existence of the camps in Xianjiang have been claims by Chinese government officials I found myself which contradict one another. No hard evidence disproving any of the mountain of evidence (which could be compromised, I admit) has been offered. I am biased that I tend not to believe massive institutions which are advantaged by presenting specific narratives generally, which is why I don’t just believe what the english-language sources say nor do I believe what the Chinese authorities say without supporting evidence. I find that if there is a mountain of evidence that these camps exist, and if none of the evidence has been contradicted or disproven thus far, then it’s more likely that these camps exist than don’t exist.
I agree that there is frustratingly little evidence provided by the Chinese government when the Western claims could be disproven and discredited. All I can find are counter-claims which contradict one another.
It is not possible to prove something absolutely. It is possible to disprove things. This is also how science works. There is a ton of evidence supporting the existence of these camps, but others have made fair claims that this evidence is all suspect. I would like to see official evidence to the contrary of these claims, rather than counter-claims which contradict one another on the existence of these camps.
I don’t like entertaining the stupidity that is the white genocide conspiracy theory.
I made a good faith effort looking for something that disproves the existence of the internment camps at Xinjiang but all I’ve found is government officials either claiming they don’t exist or do exist and respect human rights or are like boarding schools. I lack faith in massive institutions making statements that are convenient for themselves, especially when they make contradictory statements.
Yes the US is much worse. Yes capitalism is a sham. Yes racism is the single most evil and destructive idea in world history and must be dismantled. Yes the historical Dessalines was a hero.

Technology@beehaw.org•AI-generated stories rated better quality than human-written ones, study finds
251·2 months agoHaving read the compared stories now, I have to say I’m deeply offended at the results. The AI stories are quicker to read because they are chains of cliches which state and restate the theme of the story (as stated in the prompt) outright instead of demonstrating it through the charged and personal perspectives of the characters. The LLM generated text is meaningless word sausage formatted to be easier to read for people who don’t read much. I have never read something more cynical, and I have read plenty of trash by authors who hate their audience and consider them all to be idiots.

Software defies economics. It can be replicated almost infinitely at almost no cost. When software companies sold software one package at a time in the 90s anti-piracy was a big deal because it was very simple for any given person to “copy a floppy” and receive the full package of software from another individual without the company knowing or being involved. It was like borrowing a rake from a neighbor, but the neighbor got to keep his rake as well.
Because of this, software companies decided instead to treat software as a service rather than as a product. In the 2010s many software companies shifted to the subscription model where instead of selling software one package at a time, the service of the software would be available to rent while the company guarded the propriety aspects of their software. This was like the company owning the rake and both you and your neighbor needed to pay the company to borrow the rake.
Now software can be reverse-engineered without the source-code. Now if you rent the rake from the company, you can keep a copy of it and freely distribute it without the company being involved or aware. I’m not sure how software companies will reckon with this advancement.
