  • My advice as someone who’s server is so large backups aren’t feasible at my price point. Ensure that things you care a lot about, photos, family videos, tax information, things that can’t be replaced have a proper 3-2-1 backup solution and test it periodically. Nothing worse that putting all that effort into a backup then not being able to recover.

I do not recommend backing up media, like movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and music. Use a 2-1. Have two copies of the data with one offline. I have over 20Tb of high-res media and it would cost more than it’s worth to me to backup that stuff. So I don’t. I can just redownload The Lord of the Rings, I can’t redownload the video my parents took of me in a childhood school play.

Yeah but with a ten year old, talk to their parents first. You want to drench a child without their consent? Okay but they had better be in an environment that can explain to them that this is a tit for tat type thing. A ten year old doesn’t understand a lot of things and it’s not up to the child to perform what we expect them to. Do they need to be corrected, yes. Does doing it so callously benefit anyone? Only a bully. There’s a huge difference between constructive discipline and just straight up punishment. It takes an adult to know the difference.

  • Hahah simply. I’ve only trained a handful of dogs, so professional dog trainers sound off here but there are dogs that are more or less untrainable. Sure difficult dogs can learn a few manors or tricks, but either because an abundance or lack of intelligence they’re not going to ever be a show dog. Depending on the dog maybe the best they get is just not as reactive instead.

Yeah, it’s kind of lost all meaning. I’ve seen Marxists call Liberals tankies, and I’ve seen Liberals calls Marxists tankies. I’ve seen right wingers call Leftists tankies, and I’ve seen Leftists call Centerists tankies. I know where the word came from, and who the first tankies were but I rarely know what a person’s intent is with that word anymore. Maybe it’s just young people slang now and I’m just too old to get it.

Because I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I’m with isn’t it anymore and what’s it seems weird and scary. And it’ll happen to you!

Kay this is just semantics at this point, so ultimately it’s unimportant because delving this deep into it distracts from the overall conversation.

With that said, wouldn’t the existence of a post office and other socialized services make the US (and basically every nation state in existence) by strict definitions, a mixed economy? Like if we had to keep to first year undergrad levels.

To be clear for the back row, being this pedantic about semantics not only distracts from the overall conversation but when made as a serious point is at best a sign of ignorance, and at worst it’s an argument made in bad faith in order to move the goal post. This comment is meant as an aside. Ultimately like everything else an economy is a spectrum, and strict categories are more often than not caused by our desire to make things simple.

  • While there can definitely be some legitimate discussion and ambiguity over which culture/country gets to inherit Mayan artifacts, for example, saying that the British, for example, should inherit it is a very weak argument. It’s not like the entirety of an extinct societies people just dropped dead. Some survived and after some time rebuilt new societies. Using Mayan artifacts as an example, Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras have a better claim to them then the British. It’s not propaganda or useless to say that items of cultural heritage should be returned.

So how about this what about-ism, if you live in the United States, the British took cultural artifacts from your lands too and aren’t giving them back right this moment. Where did you think all those native American artifacts in British museums came from? They didn’t make them and it’s not like North America was spared from British plundering. Might be nice to get that stuff back.

There is no moral grounds for stealing cultural artifacts. Even if it means the culture that rightfully possesses it wants to destroy it. That choice is entirely that cultures decision to make. Even if we disagree. It’s one thing to clutch your own pearls but so much worse to do that to someone else’s.
