7 months agoHi, I recommend you read the book “Run Your Own Mail Server”. The fact that a book exists for this topic is all the proof you need to not do this decision. But if you absolutely must, this is the way.

Only I rely on my services and if they break I’ll fix them myself.
I don’t run Immich specifically but all other software I run is on :latest tags and unattended-upgrades on Debian. It works so, why bother?
Docker Engine is open source. They could’ve easily contributed patches to it which just further proves that it is a NIH syndrome response.
I use Docker exclusively. Podman is the NIH syndrome response to an industry standard. It has its benefits but Docker just works.

There were news about Ubuntu doing it too some time ago, maybe they realized it’s not feasible yet. I don’t follow their development as I don’t use those distros
I daily drive Hyprland too, there are some shortcomings with how the mouse behaves with XWayland but I don’t think it’s a Hyprland issue and Gamescope remedies that problem so overall, it’s a great experience.
And when they’re right, it’s usually addressed. I say usually because GNOME exists.
Every change will bring it’s fair share of complainers, not much we can do about that. LILO to GRUB, SysV to systemd and now X11 to Wayland. No one is forcing your hand (unless you use a pre-packaged distro like Ubuntu/Fedora, in which case you go with whatever the distro provides), keep using X11 if you want stability, if you wanna dip your toes in bleeding-edge software and increase it’s userbase to show hardware manufacturers that their drivers need to be updated (I’m looking at you, NVIDIA) then feel free to mess around.
Eventually the day will come when Wayland apps will simply not launch on X11 and you’ll migrate too.
18·1 year agoI understand that this goes against the nature of what signal believes in. But in my opinion the only way forward for signal is to license their code under the AGPL and offer the big tech companies that rely on their encryption to purchase a custom license. The other messaging apps will use signal’s protocol anyway, may as well make them pay the running costs.

Yeah… the company that runs the gTLD thinks they struck gold and charge a premium for it. I wanted to purchase cloud.sucks but at $16k a year… nah I’ll pass.
Rumor has it some of the higher ups don’t like the new UI either.

For the license to be changed every team member needs to submit a written agreement that he agrees to the change, otherwise their contributions must be removed as they were written under a different license, the only exception is usually permissive licenses such as MIT/BSD 3 clause.
Usually, to rugpull FOSS contributors, companies who maintain FOSS software ask contributors to sign a CLA which waives their rights and lets the control their contributions. Immich isn’t doing any of that, and it will likely remain AGPL forever because changing the license will be a big hassle for them with the amount of contributors.
