Interesting, I’d tend to demote the initialism, ie topSecretFbiFiles.tar.gz
I went on a tear at one point trying to really understand, rigorously (I’m a computer and maths person by trade and training), what dialectics are and how, specifically, the material dialectic (the foundation of Marxist thought!) should work.
I was a bit dissapointed to understand that they can’t really be “rigorous” in that fashion and that they’re really more of a philosophical and rhetorical tool. I do still get a lot of use from them, and in discussions with other people the framework of the dialectic (“Ok, what if we took these two ideas and put them on opposite ends of a spectrum, how does that look?”) is very useful for explaining and expounding upon ideas.
I sort of consider dipping fries and fries with stuff on them to be two different but related species of meal, pretty much exactly like the difference between chips-and-salsa and nachos. Frychos.
As to preferences, for dipping, spicy ketchup (mix tomato ketchup 1-for-1 with siriacha or other hot sauce); for frychos, fucking everything! Load em up: guacamole, chilli, cheese, onions, peppers, bacon, mushrooms, gravy, salsa, mustard, marshmallows, spinkles, alright alright I’m getting carried away now, you get the idea!
It looks like the Extra Fabulous guy, yeah. (Not PBF though, very different style. I guess your link was a joint work?)
It never bothered me in Source games, but I don’t really care for it as a mechanic. Specifically in Half-Life, I don’t like how it overlaps with long jumping either. (Jump then crouch to crouch jump, crouch then jump to long jump.)
But I wouldn’t want it in other games because manteling is a superior mechanic. Mantelling is usually when you can hold down the jump key close to a ledge to grab it and pull yourself up, rather than jumping. In most games that have it, mantelling into a smaller space (a vent or pjpe) auto-crouches as you enter.
It allows for making longer jumps, exciting last moment saves, pulling yourself up into small spaces, simpler climbing mechanics, and more. It’s just a better, more intuitive mechanic that replaces long jumps and crouch jumps and requires no extra key presses.
Totally missed touch along with many other senses.
Ah, that sounded familiar as you described it! Thanks for the correction and context! I’d forgotten how early into multicore we still were. Well that also explains why it doesn’t have specific fans then, it’s “basically” “just” parallel programming (which people still don’t understand!)
Yeah the university running a PS3 cluster was fun news! I recall there being a brief run on the devices as people thought there’d be sudden academic demand for them as supercomputers. I think you could run “folding at home” on them as a screensaver? Which (if I remember right) kind of would make ps3 the biggest research computing cluster around for a while!
I always wondered about the legacy of the Cell architecture, which seems to have gone nowhere. I’ve never seen a developer praise it, and you can find devs who love just about every silly weird computer thing. Like, surely someone out there (emu devs?) have respect for what Cell was doing, right?
I’ve never understood it. Multicore processors already existed (the X360 had a triple-core processor, oddly) so I’m not clear what going back to multiple CPUs accomplished. Cell cores could act as FPUs also, right? PS3 didn’t have dedicated GPU, right?
Such a strange little system, I’m still amazed it ever existed. Especially the OG ones that had PS2 chips in them for backwards compatability! Ah, I miss my old PS3.
I had a DVD box set in my wishlist for a while. It was “50%” off during the sale, but I think the price actually went up by about $10. I did still snag a bunch of movies for under $20 each, which at least feels like a good price.
I see the comments you replied to have been removed (thanks mods!) but I have to say that anyone with the screen name “octavius” (or any other Roman emperor, general, or guy) is automatically on troll-watch.
Turns out, most people think their stupid views are actually genius
They say there are no asexuals in fox holes
Absolutely. Pandemic “inflation” threw all kinds of prices too high and nothing is coming back down because most industries are so small that they’re all essentially oligarchies now.
I am dead certain that the pandemic has actually put the US into a hard recession which the Fed has been covering up with various tricks. I’m pretty sure that after the presidential election, whichever way it goes, the economy is going to tank.
I can pretty rarely get under $30 for just myself ($50 for two i consider quite the deal now) and we live in a city with many options, and most places i would order from are about a 10 minute drive. I’m not saying it’s right or good, just that the prices you see are in line with what I’ve been seeing. Food is quite a bit more expensive right now.
I think if I saw a statue of a cat just chilling, I’d get the vibe. Humans have been entertained by animals doing human-like stuff since we first developed the brains to recognize it.
I keep my Obsidian notebooks and several source code repos in syncthing and then have them auto-shared between all my computers and my phone. Its been a great system, all my docs I need are readily available on all my devices with almost no delay and no cloud needed. A little advanced configuration to allow local deletes and I also have all my phone photos backed up this way too.
When I travel, I use my laptop and phone on a little travel router, so they’re always networked together and syncing files. Definitely saved my butt a few times!
This. I mean the smoke-life tattoos, the joke that she’s “smoking hot”, the very idea of a 4-5 pack a day fitness instructor being absurd. As a person, she sounds unbearable but 10/10 as a comedy bit.
I’m thinking “Smoke Yoga” for a follow-up skit, legs behind her head with a cig held in her toes (get that feet weirdos demographic too).
If you’ve never dug deeply into the ramifications of the Gates’ charity work, you might be surprised how much they use charity and their organizations to exert influence and control over the regions they help. It isn’t purely from the goodness of their hearts: billionaire philanthropy is both a PR tactic for washing over their bad behaviors and a way of creating a captive, dependent population that you can control.
I’m definitely getting my blog going regularly again… next year…
