I remember back in grad school they told us we would have to take an ethics seminar and I thought it might be something interesting about the role of a scientist in society or something like that, but it was actually pretty much just “Don’t have sex with the undergraduates, even though technically there isn’t a strict rule against it.”
So I wonder, how does a person go to a shelter and pick a pet? When I got my dog ten years ago, I wasn’t actually planning to get a dog, he was the only dog there, and he just started freaking out when I walked past him. I didn’t feel like I was making a choice. Yesterday I went to the animal shelter and deliberately met several sweet dogs, but I have no idea how I’m supposed to just pick which one will be in my life for probably about a decade after knowing them for only half an hour.

I think the perspective of moral responsibility (“lie”, “held accountable”) is not a useful one here. Punishment is one way of discouraging humans from making mistakes but it can’t prevent mistakes entirely. My field is software development and in software development there is the expectation that everyone, even the best human developer, makes mistakes relatively often, and there are frameworks for managing those mistakes. (Frameworks not focused primarily on blame or punishment.) AI can fit into those frameworks.
I agree that AI is inhumanly good at presenting wrong information confidently and convincingly.

My dog had been returned to the shelter because the folks who adopted him wanted him to stay in their yard most of the time and he kept digging out and escaping. That’s ok for some dogs but he was a dog who slept in my bed after having me tuck him in.
I’m really annoyed by this as well, but why do you jump from that to concluding that the government should ban it? I don’t see any reason why the stores should not in principle be allowed to do it.
I once had a package marked as having arrived despite never moving past the “shipping label printed” stage. But the company did send me a second one, and then a week later the first one arrived too and they told me to keep it.

I saw a guy yell at an airport employee who kept telling him that she couldn’t legally let him on the plane because the cabin door was already shut. He kept at it until a supervisor showed up, contacted the pilot, and let him in. I get where the guy was coming from (because he loudly proclaimed that he was missing a connecting flight through no fault of his own) but it was still weird to see him get something by being angry which he probably couldn’t have gotten by being nice.

My dog’s favorite game was to have me grab his tail. He would immediately spin around and grab my wrist, and then he would bite harder and harder until I let go. As soon as I let go of his tail, he would let go of my wrist. I don’t bruise easily so I was fine, but other people who tried it got bruises.
I have no idea what he got out of that game. People thought I was being mean to him, but if I held my hand out then he would walk backwards to put his tail in my hand.

My ferret would sometimes sleep in a pose with his belly up, his legs sticking out stiffly, and his front end hanging off the side of his bed in a way that looked rather uncomfortable. I would check that he was alive when I saw him doing that; ferrets are heavy sleepers so I thought he was a goner the first time it happened.
