I run a price tracker across ~25 EU hardware retailers (pricesquirrel.com). Same 153 GPU models, tracked daily for 90 days straight, no swapping products in or out.
For two months, basically nothing happened: €735 -> €750. Then over about 4 weeks, it jumped to €967, and it’s been sitting there ever since, €972 today, three months later.
Everyone’s talked about the shortage/price increases, I’ve read the same posts and articles as everyone else. But watching my own data confirm it, day by day, in real time, still doesn’t make it feel any less like the market just decided this is the new price and moved on without asking anyone.
Methodology, since someone will ask: “price” here is each product’s average across whichever 3+ retailers carried it that day, not the single cheapest price, not a shifting basket of whatever happened to be in stock. Same 153 SKUs tracked from day 1 to today
I feel you, I wanted to buy a B50 for my homelab and was waiting for prices to drop, but …
I got two 7800 XT last year for $280 each. That seems like a steal now.
Is there any reason they are rising so much currently?
from what I’ve tracked, it lines up with the broader chip shortage story, component costs have gone up across the GPU supply chain. on top of that, the RTX 5090 specifically has extra demand from people running local AI models since it’s the best consumer card with 32GB VRAM, so it’s pulling on both gamers and AI/compute users at once.
It sucks big time. I decided to upgrade my old GTX 1660 Super in July, but I hesitated a lot because of the prices. Lucky me I said fuck it and just bought a new one, since then I am watching the prices rising almost every day. 100€ so far, which seem almost okay in comparison to your numbers…
I’m indeed afraid it get even worse the coming year. Before it goes down again. If ever? Maybe it just stays at this price similar to the supermarket price hikes.
I have been considering upgrading my computer, but I don’t need to, so I have been postponing and postponing… I wonder if I will get to wait enough for a reasonable price or I will just have to suck it up when my current PC dies…
I’ve been pretty opportunistic when upgrading. Usually every 1.5 cycles.
The cost difference isn’t too big, and I just bought my last upgrade right between the crypto and AI bubble.
Many unpleasant things are worse when we see them in real time. It is enraging though. I’m wanting to build or buy a PC soon and it’s outrageous. Memory prices for what I bought five years ago ought to be half or less now. Instead, last I checked it had increased by like 30%. I’m considering using ram with known stability issues because it’s so expensive buy new
