I’m currently in the process of switching from YouTube to Piped and was getting fed up with rewriting YouTube links myself. I finally found an extension that can do this with a relatively easy setup:
Thought maybe more people might find this interesting. My setup is in the pic.
Edit: @nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de Just suggested using LibRedirect which is even better than Redirector. Also since Redirector isn’t really maintained anymore.
There is an extension called LibRedirect that does this. It’s customisable, as in, we can set if we want to redirect to piped or invidious, and which specific instances to use. Not only just YouTube but other services like GitHub to Gothub, Twitter to Nitter, reddit to libreddit etc. The default settings are already great.
Edit - added the link.
The problem with all those addons is that you’re limited; you can use only what they already set for you.
Redirector is more flexible.
It is, but it already has all the services that most would use with big QoL features compared to Redirector. Namely quickly adding and removing instances, and quickly enabling and disabling redireciton for specific services. And is a lot easier to use in general especially for people who don’t know regex.
Plus Libredirect has a few features that redirector doesn’t, the ability to redirect to multiple different instances, and the ability to redirect embedded content such as any embedded youtube videos on any other website.
But as you said, redirector is more flexible if you need it for something other than the ~20 services that LibRedirect handles.Redirector does embedded content, too. And stylesheets, scripts and anything (if you select it).
Libredirect user here (casual).
All of this only makes sense if you’re redirecting to a frontend, right? Not an alternative platform? For instance, it would be nice to redirect all Goodreads links to Bookwyrm, but I’m not sure if this is possible. (Already got it set to redirect to Biblioreads, but just curious since Bookwyrm is what I actually use.)
That’s not even true. I use my custom instance for Piped and Libreddit in LibRedirect on all my devices.
Yooo I had not heard of gothub I’ve been looking for something like this. I’m assuming it is possible to clone repositories?
I’m just over here looking for goth-hub.
I love this. Now i want to spin up and instance and start themeing
That sounds great! I’ll check it out
It works with embedded content too. And if you’re on android, check out UntrackMe app on f-droid.
Piped redirect is too early, YouTube is still actively opposing attempts like Piped and because of that Piped only works sometimes, on certain instances, and that’s not what anyone wants. It’s worse than having a predictable ad skip to navigate.
I applaud the effort, but the Piped application needs to be stabilized. Not at all ready for prime time.
Well I’ve been using it for a while now on android and can’t complain. I don’t miss any videos from channels I’m subscribed to and It’s waaay better than using YouTube privacy-wise. As long as it works I’ll be using it.
I’m taking it works with Firefox mobile, then?
Yes it works but LibreTube is even better
I’ll give it a go!
LibreTube with Piped API disabled is where it’s at.
Do we want it to be ready for prime time, though?
As much as I like the effort, I fear that if it reaches a critical mass of popularity, Youtube will find a way to oppose it even more, making the experience shittier for everyone involved.
I hear you. And I use it all the time myself. I was just commenting on the idea of redirecting to it.
Is it just me or do piped videos never load correctly on mobile?
I’ve never had a piped video load, period. Not on mobile. Not on desktop.
Try invidious?

What’s that?
The OG piped basically. Does the same thing. You can try an example here
I dont have this problem. But maybe your instance or browser is causing problems? Kavin.rocks was causing problems for me in LibreTube, but this was fixed after switching to piped.yt.
Idk which ones I’ve used, I just know every time I’ve tried on my phone the video won’t play I Firefox or chrome.
There’s a few of them that seem to work fairly reliably, but the rest just don’t play or have error messages on load. Take a bit of time to keep hitting the ping instances button and add the ones that seem to respond well to your list.
With the way youtube throttles these connections, it’s not going to be the same experience, but I’m stubborn like that.
Doesn’t load for me on desktop either.
I dunno how so many people use Piped. It doesn’t even work half the time. Not unless I disable the Piped API.
Kavin.rocks doesn’t work for me either but piped.yt does.
I use Freetube instead.
Been using Freetube for about 4 months now and I love it.
Never used Piped but I’m intrigued. Will addons like Enhancer for YouTube, SponsorBlock, and Return YouTube Dislike work on it? Does it show comments? Will HDR videos show in HDR?
YT addons generally don’t work on Piped, but some of the most popular ones are already built in, like SponsorBlock, DeArrow and Dislike. It does show comments, but you can’t post any comments yourself. HDR videos should work since it’s just pulling the video files directly from YT servers.
You can just try it out, simply replace “www.youtube.com” with “piped.video” in any YT video or channel url.
Excellent. What a great post. I just found out about this today as well. I use these extensions to force videos to go to free tube. They work great
